Peer Workforce Student Mentoring Program

23 August 2022

Category: Projects

The Peer Workforce Student Mentoring Program is a collaboration between Queensland Alliance for Mental Health (QAMH), Queensland Lived Experience Workforce Network (QLEWN), TAFE Queensland (TAFE QLD) and WorkAbility Queensland, through Community Services Industry Alliance (CSIA). The project is funded by Department Employment Small Business and Training (DESBT) under the (National Disability Insurance Scheme) NDIS training and Skills Support Strategy (NTSSS), an initiative delivered on behalf of WorkAbility Qld.

The partnering organisations came together to explore the supply, demand, quality, and barriers to completing training for the Peer Workforce in Queensland and developed this project specifically in response to the concerns raised about completing the Certificate IV Mental Health Peer Work.

The project supports students enrolled in the Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work at TAFE QLD – Gold Coast and Mooloolaba Campuses. Lived Experience Peer Mentors provide Individual, and group based mentoring support to students. They work closely with the TAFE QLD teachers who are delivering the course to support and enrich the students’ learning opportunities through mentoring and support processes, including navigating placement opportunities.

The project identified emerging issues impacting on students. It is hoped the final project report will aisst with  developing processes, pathways, partnerships, and resources to support the sustainability and replications of the project across other Queensland RTO’s delivering the qualification.
