The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability stands as Australia’s largest inquiry into the experiences of people with disability. The government’s response to the Commission’s recommendations has several implications for the Community Mental Health and Wellbeing Sector. While some areas show promise for positive change, others require further development or raise concerns. QAMH has completed this analysis to highlight both the opportunities and challenges that the sector may face as a result of these recommendations and responses. Key areas impacting our sector include:
- Employment reforms
- Health navigation
- Anti-discrimination reforms
- Regulatory reform
- Homelessness
- Remote support
- NDIS support coordination
- Health service access
We have also identified areas of concern including:
- Need for stronger commitment to Lived Experience representation in OPCAT Advisory Group
- Queensland use of restrictive practices
- Queensland age of criminal responsibility
- Definition of disability
