At the Annual Alliance Members Meeting we will hear from interim QAMH CEO Kris Sargeant, Queensland Mental Health Commissioner Ivan Frkovic, QAMH Board Chair Cathy O’Toole and Board Finance Chair Chris Skelton on the year that was, achievements made, and what’s to come.

We will also be joined by special guest speaker Simon Katterl, who will present on Human Rights and Mental Health in Queensland: Wellbeing, Agency & Systems-Change.

Human rights, properly applied, have significant implications for the governance, design and operation of Queensland’s mental health system. Done well, systems will be funded in favour of wellbeing, community-based supports and lived experience-led services, with the regulation of these services upholding human rights, and service cultures and practices routinely respecting human rights. Implemented poorly, human rights reflect both an afterthought and a mantra, doing little to promote change and ultimately undermining trust in the law, government and mental health services. In this talk Simon will draw on his work in Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia supporting the implementation and establishment of a Human Rights Act and what that means for mental health systems, noting the important work by QAMH on Wellbeing First. In this presentation Simon will identify what Queensland’s Human Rights Act means for the Queensland Government and publicly funded mental health services, and the work required to implement them properly.

Simon Katterl (he/him) is a mental health and human rights advocate with lived experience of mental health and using public community and private mental health services. He runs a consultancy business advising government, mental health, and legal bodies, on consumer leadership, human rights, and governance. Simon’s work includes advising the Victorian Minister for Mental Health, various government departments, and providing consumer perspective supervision. He provides specialist training for mental health services on how to reshape their governance, design and operations to comply with human rights standards. He also undertakes public advocacy in favour of human rights and has written for academic and news outlets as well as his own newsletter.

*This is a Members only event.
