Delivering Care More Efficiently

In this submission to the Productivity Commission, QAMH highlights the essential role of the NGO community mental health sector in Australia’s care economy. These organisations deliver cost-effective, recovery-focused supports that keep people well, connected and out of hospital. They strengthen participation in work and community life yet remain underfunded and under-recognised in reform efforts. Real reform of Australia’s care economy will fall short unless community mental health is fully recognised and embedded in regulation, commissioning, prevention and workforce planning.

To ensure this happens, QAMH is calling for:

  • Proportionate and inclusive regulation that values the peer workforce.
  • Collaborative commissioning with NGO community mental health, lived experience, and ACCHO voices.
  • Prevention frameworks that include psychosocial supports and measure recovery, inclusion, and participation.
  • Workforce investment to grow and sustain peer and psychosocial mental health roles.
